Review 2012: Top 2012 Events In Sports

Sports was alive in 2012 with the successful staging of the quadrennial Summer Olympic Games in London, where top athletes gathered during the summer to compete not for money but for fame and glory for one’s country. The scope of the Olympics has redefined how sports and sporting events are held in the social media age. The rules of coverage has been rewritten to the point Olympic organizers had to caution Londoners not to troop to social media and act as spoilers. The Olympics proved to be the greatest show on earth as world-class athletes showcased their talents in the biggest stage in the world during the summer. There were some surprises but expectations were widely met during the multi-nation sporting event.
The Olympics was not the only sporting event that gained a lot of eyeballs during the year. But everyone would agree that other than the London spectacle, the rest of the time the focus was in major ball games in the United States. In 2012, the San Francisco Giants raced to a 3-0 lead against the Detroit Tigers to seal the World Series in dominating fashion, which was their second pennant in three years. Making the ultimate showdown a 4 – 0 series sure spiked the earnings of the stars in the Giants. On the other end at Florida, the Miami Heat finally got a ring for LeBron James and Eric Spolstra after a disappointing final series a year before. Their winning meant sealing the National Basketball Association world championship over a youthful Oklahoma City Thunder.
This year saw a shocking upset when relatively unheralded Timothy Bradley escaped with a controversial majority decision over erstwhile boxing pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao. The fight because controversial as most media outlets called the fight for Pacquiao only to be proved wrong by the judges who scored the fight for Bradley.
The controversial outcome of the fight caused the governing World Boxing Organization to have the fight reassessed by independent judges through recorded video. The judges that ware asked to score the fight anew gave the win to Pacquiao. Even with the decision, the belt stayed with Bradley who was relegated to a spectator as Pacquiao picked arch nemesis Juan Manuel Marquez in a fourth (hopefully last) fight this December to settle the score.
Here are the rundown of the best sporting events in 2012 that made the world glued to their television sets.
The Tour de France is perhaps the biggest cycling event in the world. However this year, the cycling event was pushed into the limelight not because of the riders on the road but by a former tour champion who has fallen from grace. Lance Armstrong was found guilty of using performance enhancing drugs during his reign as tour champion. As a result the world governing body of cycling has stripped him of his titles. It was a very difficult time for Armstrong as he showed a brave front to his fans.
Sebastian Vettel recovered from a pit lane start to finish third in Abu Dhabi to hold on to his place in history as a winner of the driver’s world championship for a third time in the Formula 1 World Championship.
Also this year marked something new for skydiving enthusiasts and followers. Skydiving may not be one of those regular sporting event that you will attend. However, a man from Austria elevated the sport to stratospheric heights when he jumped from a capsule from the edge of space and fell back to earth at the speed of sound. His effort made him the first man to jump at a very, very high altitude and at the same time proved that man can travel at the speed of sound without an aircraft.
